What is a tessellation?
First they were used to form a mosaic tiling of floors in Roman buildings. Pictures of tiles in the form of animals and other life forms. That cover a surface of a plane in a symmetrical way without overlapping or leaving gaps.
Write a couple of paragraphs describing the life and work of M.C. Escher. Pick out important facts that describe who he is, how he worked, and why he is famous.
M.C. Escher was known as the 'Father' of modern tessellations. Escher was born in Holland on June 17th, 1898. As a young kid he was always being recognized by his teachers for his amazing linocuts. In 1918, Escher enrolled in the 'School for Architecture and Decorative Arts' in Haarlem. He studied there until 1922. One of his nature drawing teacher, Mesquita, helped him develop more at woodcutting. Mesquita and Escher became lifelong friends. Escher was mortified when he was taken to a concentration camp in the War because he never saw him again.
In 1925 he produced what was really his first tessellation, unfortunately many people were not impressed. Kept with them and his brother helped him become known. By his death he produced 137 tesselations. Escher died in a home for old artists on 27th March, 1972. He is famous for his impossible depictions and his art has made a major impact in the world today.
