5 Steps to Create a Logo Design

The 5 musts:
A logo must be describable
A logo must be memorable
A logo must be effective without color

A logo must be scalable, effective when just an inch in size

Strive to be 'different’:
The idea should original, it is good to be different from your competitors. Copying other logos are boring and usual doing make a great impact on the viewers if it looks familiar. Should be able to stand out in a cluttered marketplace, rise above the competitors.

Start out right:
Don’t be lazy and try to make a great logo the easy way out. Stay away from clip art logo, because image probably isn't licensed for use as a logo. The same goes with logo templates. If you start out bad, your end product will most likely be inefficient and result in failure.

Simple is sometimes better:
Having a complex logo can cause many problems. Such as it would be difficult to reproduce and difficult to remember. If needed a more complex version you can work off the simple version to create another. Simple is better overall, and the viewers will remember it more.

Steps to a Final Logo:
1. The Design Brief
2. Research & Brainstorming
3. Sketching
4. Prototyping & Conceptualizing
5. Send To Client For Review
6. Revise & Add Finishing Touches
7. Supply Files To Client and Give Customer Service

Tessellation Reflection

1. Which tessellation did you find more interesting to do? In what ways was it more interesting than the other? Please explain.
I found the triangular tessellation design more interesting. The rectangular tessellation was more more messy in a way. Doing the triangular tessellation all from the computer was easier and looks more interesting. Having to draw the rectangular tessellation on the computer was messy and made the overall design look worse than the triangular design.

2. Look at your peers' work on the ning. Which two designs do you find the most successful? What qualities make them so successful?
I find Samantha’s and Olivia’s triangular designs most successful. They both have the qualities that complement their overall tessellations. They clearly show the triangular shapes and combined very well. Samantha’s is interesting because of her simplicity to the design. Olivia’s is interesting because there are two clear different triangles that were formed when tessellated. Overall everyone’s triangular designs are more successful than their rectangular ones.

3. Looking at the Grading Criteria for each design, how would you rate BOTH designs on a scale of 1-4, 4 being the highest? Please explain each grade.
For the rectangular design I deserve a 3.5. The shape is original and the shape tessellates well. I lacked a bit of creativity, considering my shape didn’t really look like an animal of any kind. Other than that, my tessellation is appealing to the eye and deserves a 3.5 because of the above.
For the triangular design I deserve a 4. I followed the criteria of using an image from the photo ning. Also the overall look of the tessellation is very successful, because of the careful combination of the triangles. Together the triangles make a very interesting tessellation to look at. I believe I deserve a 4 because of all the above and the fact that I followed all of the instructions very well.

Tessellations Practice

What is a tessellation?
First they were used to form a mosaic tiling of floors in Roman buildings. Pictures of tiles in the form of animals and other life forms. That cover a surface of a plane in a symmetrical way without overlapping or leaving gaps.

Write a couple of paragraphs describing the life and work of M.C. Escher. Pick out important facts that describe who he is, how he worked, and why he is famous.
M.C. Escher was known as the 'Father' of modern tessellations. Escher was born in Holland on June 17th, 1898. As a young kid he was always being recognized by his teachers for his amazing linocuts. In 1918, Escher enrolled in the 'School for Architecture and Decorative Arts' in Haarlem. He studied there until 1922. One of his nature drawing teacher, Mesquita, helped him develop more at woodcutting. Mesquita and Escher became lifelong friends. Escher was mortified when he was taken to a concentration camp in the War because he never saw him again.
In 1925 he produced what was really his first tessellation, unfortunately many people were not impressed. Kept with them and his brother helped him become known. By his death he produced 137 tesselations. Escher died in a home for old artists on 27th March, 1972. He is famous for his impossible depictions and his art has made a major impact in the world today.

Doodle For Google

Peace for Everyone:

What I Wish for the World... is peace for all.

How did you improve your designs, based on the feedback from your peers?
The feedback definitely helped me look back at my design and decide what works better. One big element of my design I changed was the colors of my letters. This helped my design stand out more and represent the google logo more.

What three important things did you learn from completing this assignment? Explain why they are important to your learning as a design student?
One thing I learned from this project was the element of using other figures to depict letters. Another is being able to connect a theme to a design. Lastly the color scheme is an important thing learned. These are important because the outcome of the designs are at a higher quality than they would be if you didn’t follow these things.

Based on the criteria, how successful do you feel your designs are? Please assign each design a number between 1 & 4. Justify your decision for each of your designs.
For this design I believe that I deserve a 3. This is because I thought I used words in a creative way to depict the real letters. My words related to my theme which pulled my whole design together.

Love on Earth:

What I Wish for the World... love for nature.

How did you improve your designs, based on the feedback from your peers?
The feedback I got was mainly about how my theme doesn’t connect well. So in my final draft on paper I changed my tree to an apple tree. This helped me pull together this design.

I believe I deserve a 3.5 for this design. This design was more successful than my first one because of the elements of design I used. It isn’t just words, it has images used to depict words in a creative way.
